Program Highlights

Overview: This NSF-funded GK12 program enhances middle school science and mathematics education by creating dynamic learning environments partnering Rutgers graduate and advanced undergraduate students in science, mathematics, engineering, or technology with teachers, administrators, and students in New Jersey school districts. 

Highlights of this program include:

  • Graduate and advanced undergraduate fellows form teams with local middle school teachers
    • each team includes one or two fellows (normally one graduate and one undergraduate) and two or three teachers
    • fellows serve as resources for middle school teachers in science and mathematics instruction. 
    • teachers serve as pedagogy and curriculum experts
  • Teams meet formally for the first time in the two week Summer Institute  The summer Institute activities include
    • team building and identification of team goals and interests.
    • workshops on topics appropriate for middle school curricula
    • workshops on pedagogy,  instructional strategies, assessments and teaching students with diverse learning styles;
    • development of  a new curriculum unit by each team
    • presentation of units for all participants. 
  • During the academic year, teams develop and present curriculum-based science and mathematics activities.
    • teams work together to develop activities that builds on the fellows' expertise
    • teams work together to develop Standards-based activities that meet needs in their curriculum
    • teams present new activities in the classroom and evaluate the activities
    • teams document their work in a portfolio. 
    • Fellows meet each week with the Program director and project staff to discuss their progress and challenges in the schools, try out new activities and exchange ideas.
    • All participants meet for four Saturday planning sessions
  • Fellowships & stipends are provided by the National Science Foundation.

This program is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation Program "Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education."
