| Nutrition - Fast Food
Choices |

| Objectives: |
|
- The students will be able to make healthy food
choices from a fast food menu.
- The students will be able to compare the fat
content of different menu selections.
- The students will be able to recognize the positive
and negative effects of fat in their diet.

| Materials Needed: |
|
- Copies of menus from popular fast food restaurants
with nutrition information listed on the menu (e.g., KFC,
McDonald's,
Wendy's,
Burger
King)
- Solid fat (i.e., vegetable shortening), pre-measured so that each
group of students has approximately 150g (1 tbsp. = approximately
10g)
- Small paper plates - two per student
- Measuring tablespoons for fat - one per student
- Model plate of fat that represents the average
amount of fat needed each day (i.e., approximately 70g)

Motivation: Hey kids!
It's almost lunchtime; let's order fast food!
Each group will:
- decide on any meal they would like to order from a
preferred fast food restaurant (Students will work on "Fat
Fun" when/if they finish early).
- write their choices and reasons for choosing them.
- share choices and reasons with the class, then with
a partner (list choices and reasons on the board).
*Assign jobs to the students (chairperson,
investigator, calculator, supply person).
*Tell the class that one person will be randomly chosen
from each group to present the group's findings.
*Assign a meal for each group to analyze (choose one member of each
group).
*Model how to find the total fat grams using a volunteer's meal
selection.
